Why can men be poetic while women are expected to address domestic violence while wearing short-shorts in front of a burning house?

“Can’t Hold Us Down”: Our Tolerance of Misogyny in Hip-Hop

I wrote a (pretty weak) paper on women in Hip-Hop while in college and took the stance that artists like Lil Kim embracing and celebrating her sexuality was a good thing for the genre. I don’t think I necessarily believed it, but it made researching (ha… researching) and writing about it interesting. This article is a pretty thoughtful take on the other side of that argument.
